http://zi.ma/ and http://tr.im/ are the two services which i use to trim my url’s. However its an interesting question to know “Why does Twitter use TinyURL over other services?”— May be twitter have some business relations with them

Yeah I know there are many - I’ve been researching this market for a report. Actually, too many “me too” services around.

The reason I like Cligs is that they seem to be putting out features like mad. They have this thing called Right Clig that does geotargeting for you. Affiliates are liking it.

There is a script that seems to be commonly used:

As far as I can tell, zi.ma (mentioned above) is the only popular one using it. Of course there are other scripts, including open source ones.

Looking forward to seeing some of the other shorteners that people are using, further putting TinyURL to shame

@Joseph - There are certainly many..many other shorteners, which is why I posted the link to other shorteners (screenshots). There are also MANY writeups on shorteners, including many additional factors which I didnt touch on.

Great post. Let’s all thank tiny for what it has done, because it surely has had a role, but now it’s done. Zi.ma tr.im are good. I look for least total characters, ease of use, and looks. It may as well be pretty. Is.gd is nice because it will paste to the clipboard for you.

These are hardly the only, let alone best, URL shortners with analytics. Lifehacker had a vote recently and their visitors came up with their top 5:

Yes bit.ly and tinyurl are in there, but the others, especially Cligs (the first one), are good too.

Just thought I’d add http://www.twitclicks.com to the list. Kyle is still working out a couple things with it, I think, but the analytics are pretty slick so far.

I agree, though. TinyURL by default is rather dumb. Actually, I could even think of Twitter having their own shortener. I don’t see why they wouldn’t.
